Thread and needle diagramA single green thread curves through a needle and three stitched loops, like a simple sewing pattern.

Choose the problem

No special machine. Each repair uses a hand needle, matching thread, and scissors.

Loose button

About five minutes for a shirt button with two or four holes.

  1. Thread the needle and knot the end.
  2. Stitch through the fabric and button holes six to eight times.
  3. Wrap thread beneath the button twice, knot on the inside, and trim.

Torn pocket seam

For a short opening along an existing seam.

  1. Turn the garment inside out and align the old seam.
  2. Use small backstitches across the opening, extending past both ends.
  3. Knot on the inside, trim, and check the pocket with your hand.

Loose hem

For a small section that has come unstitched.

  1. Fold the hem to its original crease and pin it in place.
  2. Make small stitches along the old line, catching only a few outer fibers.
  3. Knot inside, remove pins, and check that the fabric lies flat.

Before you start: Try the stitch on a hidden area first if the fabric is delicate. For leather, heavy denim, or a large tear, ask a local repair professional.
